James will discuss the broad range of threats in cyberspace and how to minimise risks to personal data, bank accounts and cybercrime. As if that wasn’t enough he will poor practices in web development which have allowed gross breaches or privacy to occur. Bitcoin, cloud, Ponzi – some of the words he may mention. Card skimming, identity theft, passwords – definitely on the agenda.
Dr James Hamlyn-Harris Dept. of Computer Science & Software Engineering, Swinburne University of Technology
James Hamlyn-Harris started doing cybersecurity back in 1986 before it was a thing. After getting root access on the university server (at the end of his Applied Science degree), he pretty much forgot about cyber, focussing on two research degrees in Material Science and watching with wry amusement the rise to dominance of the IBM PC and Microsoft.
But that all changed in 2001 when he joined the School of IT at Swinburne. It was the height of the dot-com boom and anyone who could talk and code was in high demand. By 2006 James had another Master degree – this time in IT – and was teaching the most amazing part of computer science: cybersecurity, or how to protect computer systems and data from the bad guys by finding the flaws before they do. By 2011 he has completed another course – this time in e-Forensics.
James is now the Deputy/Acting Chair of Computer Science and Software Engineering and the author of Swinburne’s new Master of Cybersecurity. In his spare time he does forensic investigations, security testing and manages Swinburne’s teams in the national Cyber Security Challenge Australia CTF.

The SAM CLI is a tool that allows developers to bootstrap their development with blueprints, and to locally debug and test their serverless applications. In this session you will learn how you can use these tools, together with the AWS Code Suite, to increase the speed at which you develop, test and release products, services and features to your users, in a fully-managed, cloud-native CI/CD workflow.

Quality Analysts (QAs) are not there to assure quality.
They are there to analyse quality and quality practices and advise on approaches to system quality. They are particularly good at helping mitigate quality risks because of their trained ability to question what seems to be there.
They are neither the gatekeepers of the releases, nor meant to be the bottlenecks for testing, nor the owners of quality.
We always need testing and feedback, but do we always need testers?
Sometimes we do, and sometimes we don’t. This talk is knowing when one is relevant and then knowing HOW to be relevant. This includes looking after your career as QA and staying ahead of the curve and remaining employable.
